What Is Digital Strategy?

Okay, confession time: I’ve been working as a digital strategist for years, and I still get blank stares when I tell people what I do. Sometimes I get the polite nod—you know the one, where the person has absolutely no idea what you just said but doesn’t want to admit it. So, let’s clear this up once and for all.

Digital strategy is basically the game plan for how a business shows up online. Think of it like GPS for your brand. Without it, you’re just wandering around the internet, posting random memes, crossing your fingers, and hoping someone stumbles across your website. Spoiler alert: that almost never works.

Here’s what it looks like in real life:

  • Your goals. Do you want more people to know about your brand? Drive sales? Build a loyal community?
  • Your audience. Who are you actually talking to? And no, “everyone” is not an answer.
  • Your platforms. Website, social media, email, ads—each one has its own personality, and you don’t need to be everywhere at once.
  • Your content. What are you actually saying, sharing, or teaching that makes people want to hang out with you?

It’s not about chasing every new trend (looking at you, Threads/TikTok/whatever pops up next). It’s about making intentional choices that line up with your goals and your people.

Think of it this way: digital strategy is the difference between shouting into the void and having a meaningful conversation that actually leads somewhere.

And the best part? You don’t have to be a tech wizard or spend a million bucks to make it work. A solid strategy is more about clarity than complexity. Once you know where you’re headed, all those digital tools become way less overwhelming—and actually kind of fun.

So next time someone asks me what I do, maybe I’ll just say: I help brands stop wandering and start winning online.
